The area's MP says she feels a 'little bit cynical' about the funding

People in Clifton say more police officers to crack down on anti-social behaviour are among the ways in which £20 million could be spent in the suburb. The Government confirmed over the weekend that Clifton had been chosen as one of 55 areas which will be given investment over the next 10 years to boost its high street.

The funding announcement for Clifton comes after its large Wilko store on Southchurch Drive recently closed along with hundreds across the country. Businesses now remaining along the street include a 24-hour gambling shop and Heron Foods. But one 82-year-old resident who moved into Clifton when the estate was built in the 1950s reacted to the funding by saying: "I'll believe it when I see it." Clifton resident Margaret Heath, 74, also welcomed the funding but when hearing that it would be spent over 10 years added: "We might not be here by then."

"It's got to meet the needs of people in Clifton. The thing is though, we've heard promises so many times from this Government so excuse me for being a little bit cynical about promises of funding in the run-up to the next General Election."
