Former All-Ireland winner Ronan Clarke discusses his mental health struggles and recovery journey on TG4's Laochra Gael.
Armagh legend Ronan Clarke has opened up about his battle against depression. The former All-Ireland winner and two-times All-Star suffered the illness after missing seasons with an Achilles injury at the height of his career. Clarke, 42, chose TG4 ’s Laochra Gael programme to share his mental health struggles in the hope it could help others. He explained that depression is a daily struggle, and he uses different coping mechanisms, such as exercise, to manage it.
Clarke is no longer on medication and emphasizes the importance of staying healthy and active. He recalled the dark days following his Achilles injuries, where he was bedridden for months and struggled to ask for help. This experience led him to learn the importance of seeking support when needed. Clarke believes his story can help others facing similar challenges. He acknowledges the stigma surrounding mental health that existed in the past but notes a positive shift towards openness and acceptance. During the program, which airs this Sunday on TG4, Clarke discussed how the diagnosis of depression in 2007 relieved a significant amount of pressure. He credits Dr. Frances O’Hagan for her invaluable support during that time. Clarke, who initially sought medication, found that exercise and healthy eating played a vital role in his recovery. He also shared his struggles with his father, who offered unwavering support.Beyond the dark days, Clarke celebrated the highs of his career, including Armagh's first All-Ireland victory in 2002. He also highlights his Ulster title wins in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2008, as well as a National League title. Clarke expresses contentment with his achievements and the recognition he received. He emphasizes the importance of teamwork and acknowledges the contributions of his teammates. He is delighted to see the current Armagh team flourish and is particularly thrilled for Kieran McGeeney, a former teammate and leader who he considers a great manager.
