The Madden club man sustained the injury during an in-house game and had surgery but wondered if he would be able to lift his child or ever play football again

Niall Grimley can recall the scene, lying there in the spinal unit of Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital . It was May, 2022. The Armagh midfielder, who won an All-Ireland at the weekend, had just undergone surgery on a broken neck and was in “floods of tears” wondering if he would ever be able to hold his child - let alone play again.

“At the time my wife was only 10 weeks pregnant and I had lost feeling in my hands,” he recalls. “I could not feel my thumbs. “I try to set out my stall so that I don’t look through the rear view mirror and just look straight out front at what’s there at the moment.” “My family had sent me a video during the week. It was just good luck messages and a video of me lying in a neck brace in ‘the Royal’ and when I went home. It just brings it all back.

“Obviously, I am lucky we have an amazing family. We have a huge family, the Grimleys of Madden. There’s a lot of them. “Unfortunately, it's at my doorstep at the minute and it could be at someone else's doorstep, and I'm just aware of it now. “He's talked about a lot. You just have to get yourself right. I am doing it for him. I’m doing it for his kids. I’m doing it for his family,
