Sending battle tanks to Ukraine is good defence policy. Defeating Vladimir Putin as rapidly as possible will deter other dictators and help secure our safety.

It seems counterintuitive, but sending Australian equipment into European war is the best way to prevent us ever needing to use it closer to home.

Having Australian tanks collecting dust while a murderous madman swallows a democracy can only make sense if we foresee imminent war at home. Otherwise, why are we keeping them?Though wars can flare suddenly and unpredictably, the only genuine prospect of regional conflict is Xi Jinping seeking to “reunify” Taiwan by force. But even hawkish assessments of Xi’s ambitions do not see this happening soon.

So if Australian tanks won’t be defending Australian cities, surely our weapons can be used to defend Australian national interests, including those that fall outside our borders. Last year, Australia proudly stated it was the “largest non-NATO contributor” to Ukraine’s defence. While debatable then, it is no longer true. So far, Australia has provided approximately $655 million in support, including $475 million in direct military assistance. According to the Global Firepower Index, Australia military ranks 16th in the world. With the 13th largest economy, we can and must do more.
