The scarlet insignia carrying Coldstream Guards’ battle honours is seen as the “beating heart of the regiment”, although its heft means “you’ve got to do a bit of weights in the gym”, said Lt de Klee.“We did the Queen’s funeral, state visits, and the State Opening of Parliament so the nerves should be okay. But this one I think probably will top them all.
“It is double the size of her late Majesty’s funeral, and about triple the size of the Jubilee pageant,” said Lt Col Shaw, 43, from Surrey. Working closely alongside Lt Col Shaw has been Garrison Sergeant Major Andrew ‘Vern’ Stokes, 51, who has combined the intensity of military planning for the first Coronation in seven decades with training for the London Marathon, which he ran in a personal best time last Sunday.
“Everybody knows exactly how they are legally allowed to react of any of those,” added Sergeant Major Stokes, who was in charge of all military and ceremonial aspects of the Queen’s State Funeral.
