The Ministry of Defence is to take on a wider range of candidates as number of troops plummet to lowest level in 200 years
will allow young people with ADHD, autism and chronic fatigue to join the armed forces in a bid to tackle the recruitment crisis,In a historic move designed to transform its intake of soldiers at a time of increasing global instability, the MoD has scrapped dozens of strict recruitment rules which meant hundreds of people a year wanting to serve were rejected.
They said: “If you look at units during the 80s and 90s, a lot of these soldiers clearly had some sort of mental health issue. But at the time, diagnoses were a lot less common so it did not show up in recruitment. You can be a perfectly good soldier with autism or ADHD, but the checks are time-consuming and strenuous, so we don’t recruit as many people as we should”.
Some of the difficulties with armed forces recruitment in recent years have been caused by problems outside the control of the MoD. Slow speeds at obtaining medical records fromIt is estimated that the onboarding process for the Army takes between 200 to 400 days, with half of applicants waiting an average of 321 days to join and 47 per cent of applicants voluntarily drop out of the process.
BMI has been labelled an outdated measure in recent years, as it does not account for muscle mass. In the past five years, 282 recruits were rejected for having too high a BMI.
