Arsenal struggled for goals in Arteta’s early years - scoring fewer in his first two seasons than the much-maligned league total United managed last year.
Young players and astute if expensive signings over the last 18 months or so have seen Arsenal become City’s closest challengers. It’s where United want to be. Ten Hag is putting his own stamp on the side but they remain a work in progress. Early silverware was crucial, as was a return to the Champions League, but if United don’t get it right this season it must be seen as part of the process and not the end of the line.
