The 'portals,' which create a 24/7 video connection between the cities, will be turned back on by the end of the week.
The livestream video connection between two art installations in New York City and Dublin , Ireland is temporarily shutting down, organizers told The National Desk Wednesday.
The installations, described as “portals,” earned widespread attention on social media after establishing a realtime 24/7 video connection between the two cities. Dublin City Council officials said the portal represented a major step forward in international relations. “One of my key aims as Lord Mayor is to make the City more inclusive,” Lord Mayor of Dublin Daithí de Róiste. “The Portals project embodies this, bringing together technology, engineering and art to bring communities from across the world closer together and to allow people to meet and connect outside of their social circles and cultures.”
However, New York-based portal organizer Flatiron NoMad Partnership told TND the installations have begun to cause trouble. “Instances of inappropriate behavior have come from a very small minority of Portal visitors and have been amplified on social media,” a spokesperson wrote. “In New York, we have had a set of protocols in place since the Portal’s launch, including 24/7 on-site security and barriers to prevent people from stepping onto the Portal."circulating on social media shows a woman on the New York side of the portal flashing her breasts at Dublin portal viewers while jumping up and down.
