A decade after its creation, a walking trail in Shrewsbury, decorated with tiles designed by schoolchildren, continues to inspire locals and visitors alike. The trail, conceived by former art teacher Mike Griffiths, aims to showcase the town's architectural beauty and foster a sense of appreciation among its younger residents.

A former art teacher who created a walking trail to encourage children to take an interest in the town where they live is still maintaining it a decade later. Mike Griffiths, a former teacher at Wakeman School in Shrewsbury , was struck by the beauty of the town when he first arrived. However, he was surprised to learn that the children he taught had little knowledge of the local architecture.

Determined to change this, Griffiths set out to create a walking trail that would showcase the town's hidden gems. The trail took children past some of Shrewsbury's most notable sights, including the stunning brickwork of Shrewsbury Abbey's chimney stacks. Griffiths recalled his initial walks near the abbey, noting the intricate details of the chimneys. When the children confessed they had never seen these architectural marvels, he knew he had to take action. 'I wanted them to look up and look up at the architecture that's all around the town,' Griffiths explained. To further engage the children, Griffiths tasked them with creating artwork on tiles. When Wakeman School closed its doors in 2013, the decision was made to use these tiles to decorate the walking trail. Today, these colorful pieces of art can still be seen adorning the trail throughout the town. Griffiths remains dedicated to the project, ensuring the tiles are free from vandalism and continue to inspire awe in future generations.
