Protests in Ghana grow, while 11 arrested in the Philippines
Peaceful demonstrations erupted in Accra last Friday as hundreds took to the streets, asking the government to pay heed to illegal mining operations, known locally as 'galamsey'. Protesters included Catholic Church leaders and campaigners, who said they aimed to raise awareness about the environmental devastation caused by unlicensed mining and oppose the arrest and detention of activists.
In a separate series of events, Philippine authorities arrested 11 Chinese nationals yesterday in Camarines Norte for operating an illegal mining site. The miners were working under tourist visas at a mineral processing plant, reportedly without full legal permits. The company involved had an Environmental Compliance Certificate, but authorities said it had expanded beyond the allowed area."That is already a blatant violation...
