Last October Jennifer Mehigan’s art studio in the Old Cathedral Buildings on Church Street in the town was gutted

An artist who lost her life’s work in a devastating fire in the Cathedral Quarter area of Belfast last year has recovered to showcase her new work at an exhibition in the city this month.A teenager is alleged to have started the fire deliberately , with an estimated £3million worth of damage caused following the fire.

“The fire was a huge blow as I lost 15 years of work, my studio was near the heart of the fire so there was nothing salvageable unfortunately,” Jennifer told Belfast Live. “The recovery was weird, I think the 'funeral' that all the artists in Belfast held in Buoy Park was really helpful in terms of getting recognition for the fire because a lot of people might not think it's such a big deal, but to lose every sketchbook and idea you've ever had on top of the work was really hard to get through.

“I kept exhibiting straight away after and had a big show in Dublin a month after the fire and it was uncomfortable but possible.
