more often? According to the Snow Sports Industry Insights Study, from 2014 to 2017, African-American men and women accounted for 8.3% of snowboarders and 6.7% of cross-country skiers on average. To me, even that small 8% doesn't seem to be visible.

When we look at the Olympics, we see so many Black people rising the ranks and being crowned as the best athletes in the world, but this success is limited to a court, track, or field. It’s rare to see people of colour up in the mountains. Like many of my curious and adventurous Black peers, I worried that the decision to dedicate a significant chunk of your early adult life to play in the mountains would have been perceived as irresponsible. Growing up in a Black household meant that you were taught from young that you are not always granted the same luxuries of following your passions. Granted, the self-imposed pressure to steer toward a conventional path of stability is often reinforced by immediate family.

Some may argue that winter sports tend to be more popular among white people as we assume that although naturally, Europeans live in the northern hemisphere, where there is snow and cold. It is true that warmer regions are of the earth are inhabited by darker-skinned ethnic groups. But arguments about geography ignore the larger issues of racism and classism. For instance, some parts of Africa actually have ski areas, places as Algeria, Morocco, South Africa, Lesotho.
