As though by finally doing something useful, the fat on my tummy that is now stretched over my swelling uterus is no longer just an uncomfortable truth, but is serving a higher purpose that people feel able to think kindly upon.Aside from how sad that idea is to think about in general, it’s also making me feel anxious about how these same people will discuss or interact with my body once my baby is no longer inside it.
Luckily, I have years of therapy around body image issues to fall back on in the event that the steady stream of praise abruptly switches off, but there’s no doubt it will hurt. When you’re held responsible for growing and birthing the child, it can make you feel really vulnerable. Not only does your body physically evolve in an acutely visible way, but inside, your emotional ecosystem can become much more unpredictable. At the same time, life is changing rapidly, and fear of the unknown looms large.
