A pile of asbestos roofing dumped on a footpath in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, has remained uncollected for more than two weeks despite multiple requests to the council. The fly-tip, first reported on December 12th, is blocking the entrance to a popular bridle path. Mansfield District Council has confirmed it aims to clear the asbestos on Friday, December 27th, stating that the delay was due to necessary testing and arranging collection procedures.

A Nottinghamshire council has explained why it will take more than a fortnight for it to clear up a "dangerous" pile of asbestos roofing that has been dumped on a footpath. One man living close to the site of the Mansfield fly-tip says it first appeared on December 12, but has not yet been cleared despite multiple requests to the council.

The affected area is the entrance to a public bridle path accessed off the A617 Sherwood Wood East, taking those using the path into the Mansfield end of Harlow Wood. The path is said to be a popular walking route for families and dog walkers and Mansfield District Council has now confirmed that it is aiming for the asbestos to be cleared on Friday .

David Taylor, an ex-policeman living in the Berry Hill area of Mansfield, said: "It's dangerous stuff and it's exactly as it was when it first appeared, apart from the fact that people have been walking down the path and going down on bikes and it's started to break up a bit. It's hazardous to anybody."It's a regular spot for fly-tipping. Usually it's off the back of a lorry for builder's waste and all sorts of things".

Julie Snowdon, a public space manager at Mansfield District Council, said: "I can confirm that the asbestos will be collected this Friday 27 December. We have been waiting for a quote and collection date from Veolia's contractor to come through and they will have had to have the asbestos tested to identify the type of asbestos as this affects the collection procedures and disposal point.

"Unfortunately whilst I appreciate this is not ideal it is a necessary process to go through to ensure the safe collection and disposal".
