Sheryl, an Asda cashier, went above and beyond to help a 10-year-old autistic girl named Olivia who was experiencing a meltdown during a shopping trip. Sheryl, who has a six-year-old autistic daughter of her own, recognized Olivia's distress and offered her a chance to work at the checkout counter, allowing her to scan groceries. This kind gesture brightened Olivia's day and made her shopping trip much more enjoyable.

Laura, a mother, is accustomed to her daughter Olivia facing difficulties in certain environments. Olivia, who has autism, can experience meltdowns when overwhelmed, leading to stares from onlookers who don't comprehend what's happening. However, when a meltdown occurred at an Asda branch in Rochdale, cashier Sheryl knew exactly how to respond and promptly stepped in to assist. Having a six-year-old autistic daughter herself, Sheryl is well-versed in the challenges of such shopping trips.

Witnessing the 10-year-old Olivia becoming overwhelmed, she approached her, engaged in a friendly conversation, and then, with permission from Olivia's mother Laura, escorted her to the checkout counter, making her day by allowing her to scan groceries. Sheryl shared, 'Olivia was upset when she entered the store and sat on the floor, so I went up to her and asked if she was okay. Her mum said she is autistic and was getting a bit overwhelmed. I asked if she could come and work with me for a while. She stayed by my side, and then I needed to go to the checkouts, so I asked if she wanted to help, and her face lit up. Her mum's friend went through the till, so I let Olivia put her shopping through. She loved it. My six-year-old daughter Kadie-Leigh has autism, so I know what it can be like, especially when out shopping; it can be quite overwhelming and quite challenging.'Laura described the difficulties of such shopping excursions, stating, 'You do get people who don't understand what is happening and just stare at Olivia when things get too overwhelming for her. She's actually been barred from some shops because of her meltdowns, but not Asda, as everyone there is so kind to her. When I walk into that store, I get a 'hello' from every single colleague. I have full-blown conversations with them like I work there.' Laura expressed her immense gratitude for Asda worker Sheryl, adding, 'Olivia still talks about her time on the checkout; it really did make her day. She left the store with a big smile on her face.' Sheryl has also received an outpouring of praise after Asda shared details of the incident, which occurred at the Rochdale Kingsway store, on its social media platforms. 'What a wonderful heartwarming outcome, well done Sheryl and staff,' commented one follower. 'Shopping is sometimes hard, but when you have an autistic child, it can be so hard for parents too, and to know you can go to a wonderful store with amazing staff is fantastic. Well done to all.' 'What a lovely thoughtful way to help Olivia and her mum as well,' said another. 'You are a truly caring Asda employee. Well done.' And a third commented, 'How lovely to have such a caring person on hand to help the customer out.
