TAGAYTAY CITY: With one round to spare, International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad of the Philippines has assured himself of his second straight championship in the 65 years old and above division of the Asian Senior Chess Championship.
Bagamasbad drew with top seed Randolph Schain of Cambodia after 21 moves of a French defense in the eighth round on Friday at the Knights Templar Hotel, Tagaytay City, to raise his score to 7.0 points.Entering Saturday's ninth and final round, the 67-year-old Bagamasbad is 1.5 points ahead of his nearest pursuers — International Master Aitkazy Baimurzin of Kazakhstan and compatriots FIDE Master Adrian Ros Pacis and National Master Mario Mangubat.
He will face Tuleubek Demezhanov of Kazakhstan in the final round.The chess master from Talisay, Camarines Norte, meanwhile, is set to leave for Terrasini, Italy on Monday to compete in the 2023 World Seniors Chess championships where he may have the chance to capture his third and final Grandmaster norm.The World Seniors is slated from October 24 to November 6.
