A new study suggests that asking your potential love interest for help is a surprisingly effective flirting technique.
Rom-coms have provided us with a variety of unconventional and entertaining flirting techniques over the years. In Legally Blonde, Elle Woods champions her signature move, the 'Bend and Snap,' while Cher Horowitz's advice in Clueless involves sending oneself flowers. However, if you're single and looking for love, it's time to step away from the television and turn to science.
A recent study has uncovered a surprising flirting strategy – one that scientists claim is almost guaranteed to secure you a date. Researchers from South China Normal University suggest that singletons should simply ask their potential romantic interest for assistance. This act of requesting help not only subtly conveys your romantic interest in someone but also serves as an effective method to attract a partner, according to the experts. 'Individuals will express their romantic interest towards a potential mate in a covert yet discernible manner when their intention to court is high,' the researchers explained. 'The current research demonstrates that seeking help that is dependency-oriented can effectively communicate romantic interest and can be readily perceived and accurately deciphered by the intended recipient.' The scientists explored two distinct approaches to asking for help: 'autonomy-oriented,' which involves seeking guidance, and 'dependency-oriented,' which entails asking someone to complete the task for you. While requesting someone to perform a task is often perceived negatively, the researchers propose that it could play a positive role in fostering relationships. The team conducted nine studies involving a total of 2,535 participants, incorporating both hypothetical scenarios and real-world interactions. In one study, for example, participants were presented with everyday challenges such as purchasing a bookcase, planning a travel itinerary, selecting a bottle of wine, or fixing a malfunctioning device. They were asked to choose between seeking guidance to resolve the problem or asking the helper to solve the issue for them. Another study involved asking participants to evaluate a scenario where a potential partner requested assistance in various ways and then to rate their interest in the person afterward. Analysis published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology revealed that asking someone to do something for you could serve as a strategic signal of romantic interest. When participants were exposed to romantic cues, such as imagining spending time with a desirable individual, they were more likely to request help by asking someone to complete a task for them. The researchers discovered that participants who provided assistance expressed a greater romantic interest in a person when they were asked to do something for them, rather than simply offering guidance
