The war in the Middle East has now spilled over into Syria, with Assad's forces rapidly losing ground and leaving the country's president in a very precarious position.
Amid the tentative ceasefire in Lebanon, the fighting has shifted to Syria , where the Syria n rebels have now taken their second city from Assad 's forces in two weeks. Hezbollah has shifted more attention to Syria , backing Assad 's forces. On Thursday, Syria n rebel forces captured Homs, in the country's central region, after an unexpectedly large offensive last week that saw them capture Hama city and close in on and capture Aleppo, Syria 's second-largest city.
The escalation in Syria has been extremely fast, with rapid responses that actually appear to be threatening Assad's grip on power after only a week. It is highly likely that Russia will now redirect some of its Africa Corps troops to Syria to help Assad if it hasn't started already. This would not likely represent a large enough force to change the current course of events, however. The fall of Assad would be a huge loss for Russia, both strategically and reputationally.
