Assassin's Creed Shadows, the upcoming installment in the popular action-adventure franchise, has faced censorship in Japan. The game's Japanese rating, CERO Z, indicates content suitable only for adults 18 years and older. However, even for this age demographic, the Japanese ratings agency, CERO, has deemed certain aspects of the game too graphic for local audiences.

Assassin's Creed Shadows has been rated CERO Z in Japan, signifying content suitable only for individuals 18 years or older. However, even for adults, the game appears to have crossed a line for the Japanese ratings agency, as a translated message indicates that dismemberment, specifically 'cutting off the neck and limbs of enemies,' as Google translated it, will be absent from the Japanese release.

In other regions, players can reportedly toggle this feature on or off based on their preferences. Depictions of wounds on bodies will also be altered. This isn't the first instance of CERO taking issue with graphic violence in video games. In 2021, Capcom removed decapitations from Street Fighter 6 and toned down bloodshed to meet the agency's requirements. A year later, Krafton opted to cancel the Japanese release of The Callisto Protocol altogether due to similar concerns. Interestingly, alongside the reduction of gore, some audio changes have been implemented in the Japanese version. While the specifics of these alterations—dialogue, music, screams, or cries of the less-dismembered-but-still-brutally-hacked-up enemies—remain undisclosed, the alteration of audio is more unusual. Typically, such changes occur years after a game's release, often when licensing rights for musical elements also encompass 'language and ideology.' It's possible that something within Assassin's Creed Shadows triggered these concerns. Coincidentally, the Japanese-language Steam page for the game was reportedly recently modified by some 'anti-woke' gamers who argue that the historical figure upon whom the game's protagonist is based wasn't a true samurai. This detail, while potentially unrelated, adds another layer of intrigue to the situation, especially considering the series' history of time-traveling narratives involving assassinations of figures like the Pope or carrying out covert operations for Queen Victoria. Ubisoft's creative team has been contacted for clarification regarding these audio changes, and this information will be updated if a response is received.Assassin's Creed Shadows is scheduled for release on March 20th.
