Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has made a tough call, leaving out new signings Donyell Malen and Andres Garcia from the club's Champions League knockout phase squad.
Unai Emery faced a difficult choice as he finalized Aston Villa's squad for the Champions League knockout phase, opting to leave out recent signings Donyell Malen and Andres Garcia. Villa secured their spot in the last 16 after finishing eighth in their Champions League group, setting up a clash with one of Borussia Dortmund, Atalanta, Sporting CP, or Club Brugge.
The club was allowed to register only three new players for this stage of the competition, and Emery ultimately decided to include Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio, and Axel Disasi, who all joined on loan during the January transfer window. Malen's arrival from Borussia Dortmund last month for a fee of €23 million (£19m) plus €3m (£2.5m) in add-ons, and Garcia's £7m transfer from Levante, were significant additions to Villa's squad.Emery acknowledged the tough decision, explaining the limitations imposed by the Champions League regulations. He stated, 'The rules only can accept and register three changes. We did more changes in the transfer window than we wanted. Even though we lost one player more because Jaden was a club-trained player and we lost the opportunity through him to have one more. We changed five players and can only register three. The decisions we had to take yesterday and are out are Andres Garcia and Donyell Malen. Of course, it's not a good decision I had to take yesterday, but I spoke with Andres and Donyell to tell them the decision and I argued my decision with them.' Villa's next fixture is against Tottenham in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday

Aston Villa's Emery Targets Further Signings After Malen ArrivalAston Villa manager Unai Emery has confirmed the club's intention to make further signings before the transfer deadline, but stressed that any new arrivals would likely be contingent on outgoings. Emery's comments follow the completion of a £21 million deal for Dutch international winger Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund, with a corresponding departure of Jaden Philogene to Ipswich Town. The club is exploring targets in defense, including Celta Vigo's Oscar Mingueza and Sevilla's Loic Bade. However, any moves for these players may hinge on the sale of Diego Carlos, whose proposed transfer to Fenerbahce is currently uncertain. Villa is aiming to avoid a repeat of last summer's financial constraints and is operating within Premier League profit and sustainability limits.
