The planned one-week mission of astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams aboard Boeing's Starliner is facing a significant delay due to the need for additional work on the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft for the Crew-10 mission.

Two astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who were launched to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard Boeing 's Starliner in June, are facing another prolonged delay. Their mission, originally planned for a week, now looks to be extended by a month. This delay stems from the need for an additional month of work on the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft being built for the Crew-10 mission.

NASA announced that Crew-10, aiming to send four astronauts to the ISS, is now targeting a launch no earlier than late March 2025. NASA's commercial crew program manager, Steve Stich, explained that fabricating, assembling, testing, and integrating a new spacecraft is a meticulous process. While NASA and SpaceX haven't disclosed the specific reasons for the delays, they have been aware for some time that the new Dragon capsule for Crew-10 might be behind schedule. The agency and SpaceX explored various options to return the current crew, including Wilmore and Williams, to Earth for a handover to the next rotation. These options, such as utilizing an existing Dragon spacecraft and making adjustments to the manifest, were ultimately rejected in favor of launching Crew-10 in late March. Consequently, Wilmore and Williams' planned week-long mission will now extend to approximately nine months in orbit
