Astronomers spot me on a Saturday night

A rare and gigantic ‘self-destructing asteroid’ has been photographed slowly tearing itself apart as it speeds through the solar system.

This means rubble and dust are gushing from its surface to form long and beautiful tails behind the object as it spins in a slow-motion death spiral. Jan Kleyna from the University of Hawaii said: ‘It could have been on the brink of instability for 10 million years. Even a tiny disturbance, like a small impact from a pebble, might have triggered the recent outbursts.’
