anymore. The last time I got properly smashed was five years ago at a friend’s Christmas drinks party. I was seduced by single malt whisky and realised I was in trouble when my vision went. My wife dragged me half a mile home through the snow while I repeatedly mumbled: “Leave me, save yourself.”. There are occasional games of squash, cycling, gym, occasionally the theatre or a gig. Alcohol still plays a part, but no longer excessively. It’s inevitably a couple of pints or wine with a meal.
They tend to feel more comfortable in “shoulder-to-shoulder relationships”, he says, where they get together and do something. This, he believes, is because “For me it was the football away days when a group of us would travel to games on the coach with bottles of vodka and Buckfast. Older men in my friendship group seemed to have a good time with alcohol. You never saw the dark side and the melancholy.”
