The option to have pill-only abortions at home within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy will be made a legal right starting next week.
Ministers have tabled a change to the law which means doctors prescribing non-surgical terminations must allow patients to take both pills at home if they wish.A temporary measure was introduced at the start of the Covid pandemic allowing both pills to be sent by post when people weren’t able to see doctors in person.
Doctors will be required to certify in ‘good faith’ that the gestation period is no longer than 9 weeks and 6 days. The new legislation was approved in March 2022 by a free vote of MPs, meaning they were not told to back or oppose the move by their parties.The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists called it ‘a huge win for women, girls and people accessing abortion care’.
‘The guidance, which will be published shortly, reinforces the principles that every young person should have access to early medical abortions in a timely manner and that their holistic and safeguarding needs must be addressed by providers.’
