in Munich have emphasized the importance of including all groups in the ongoing efforts to end HIV . Most acknowledge that we are falling short of achieving the United NationsPart of the strategy to end HIV /AIDS as a major public health threat involves the 95-95-95 targets. At least 95% of people living with HIV know their status. At least 95% of people who know their status are on treatment. At least 95% of people on treatment have a suppressed viral load.

Equally important are the 10-10-10 targets. Less than 10% of countries have policies or laws that limit access to HIV services. Less than 10% of people living with HIV experience discrimination. Less than 10% of girls, women, and people living with HIV experience gender inequality and violence., a research clinician at University College London, addressed the importance of combatting HIV/AIDS in children. She noted that 1.4 million children currently are living with HIV.

According to Dr. Turkova, myriad barriers impact ending HIV/AIDS in children. We know that treatment of pregnant women dramatically decreases the risk of vertical transmission. But antiretroviral coverage in pregnant women has plateaued at about 84% and varies by region. Improved and expanded early infant detection could increase the number of infected children who receive life-saving medications. But stigma and discrimination often hinder testing programs.

The tools to ending HIV/AIDS as a major public health threat exist. Simple interventions can greatly reduce mother-to-child transmission of the virus. People with an undetectable viral load cannot transmit the virus to sexual partners. Pre-exposure prophylaxis reduces the risk of acquiring HIV through sex by 99%,. But access must be universal. Stigma must end. Marginalized communities must be included.
