At least 37 people have been killed and others have been abducted in a brutal attack on a secondary school in westernAuthorities believe that another six people were abducted, while eight are receiving treatment in hospital.
Police said that attackers from the Allied Democratic Forces , an Islamist rebel group affiliated with Isis, targeted the Lhubirira Secondary School in Kasese, which borders the Congo, late on Friday.“Our forces are pursuing the enemy to rescue those abducted and destroy this group,” defense spokesperson Felix Kulayigye said on Twitter.
The attackers set buildings alight and looted food, before fleeing towards Virunga National Park in Congo, police added.The military has deployed planes to try and track the rebel group, who have posed an insurgent threat in the country since the 1990s. The nation’s president Yoweri Museveni dispatched a team from the Ministry of Education to go to the school to assess the situation and contact the loved ones of victims, officials said.last year as a new leader took over the Jihadist organisation.
The group was thought to have been largely defeated by the Ugandan military, but some members fled to the Eastern Congo, where they plotted to carry out attacks on officials and civilians in Congo and Uganda.This is a developing story. We will provide updates.
