The current hurricane season could be one of the most active in recent history, the NOAA has warned.
The 2024 hurricane season is likely to be very active as maps show near-record warm ocean temperatures thanks to a 'marine heat wave.'Hurricane season, which began on June 1 and will run until November 30 this year, is the period in which tropical or subtropical cyclones are most likely to form.
Marine heat waves, defined by the NOAA as when 'ocean temperature is above the 90th percentile for a specific length of time,' or warmer than '90 percent of the previous observations for a given time of year,' increase the likelihood of severe storm events.Commenting on the predictions, weather analyst Colin McCarthy described the North Atlantic as 'uncharted territory in 2024.
