In fact, when I received the email about the annual Christmas concert at the pre-school attended by my daughter Zoe (4¼), I could only assume that I would be subjected to the usual festive mediocrity. But I was delighted to discover that, for the enquiring cultural critic who manages to retain some sense of intellectual curiosity amidst the ravages of Peppa Pig and Supertato, it seems there are wonders to be found even in the remotest corner of Northamptonshire, where I live with my wife and daughter. Because here, on a Friday morning at that concert, I witnessed a groundbreaking performance that will come to define choral music for the under-fives for years to come. You might not have known it from the set list, which was largely respectful to the traditional repertory. Indeed, to the untrained ear, the crowd-pleasing opener of “Jingle Bells” might have seemed entirely unremarkable – but in fact this was a daring, Schoenbergian experiment in atonality, its subtle dissonances expertly managed by the morning’s maestra, Miss Hardy. The dazzling counterpoint of its second, percussive movement briefly had me wondering if someone had unearthed a previously unknown Steve Reich composition (“Music for Sleighbells”, anyone?
