Championship Sunday features three of the young stars under center in the modern NFL, plus a rookie sensation in Brock Purdy. But don't get it twisted, writes ByMikeJones. The ground game still matters.

But don’t get it twisted. Passing league or not, at this point in the season, the importance of the rushing attack cannot be overlooked. Sure, teams and their fans would love to see the quarterbacks chuck the ball all over the field. But they still need to run the ball with frequency. It’s no coincidence that the last four teams standing all emphasize balance. It’s the tried-and-true recipe for postseason success.

“The better defenses you go against, that style usually leads to slowing guys down and not allowing other teams to play at what they want to do,”coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters this week. “And it also gives you a much higher percentage of winning the turnover battle, too. I think you need to be able to win games that way in the playoffs a lot.”

Shanahan isn’t alone in this assessment, and that’s why Andy Reid, Nick Sirianni and Zac Taylor have all constructed their offenses with an eye on balance while also displaying an intentional approach to running the football this postseason. All four might go about it differently, but the Eagles, 49ers, Chiefs and Bengals view the run game as vital to their success, especially as they find themselves one step away from the Super Bowl.San Francisco 49ers

When it comes to consistency and effectiveness in the run game, the 49ers rank second to none. Shanahan learned at the feet of his father, future Hall of Fame coach Mike Shanahan, whose offenses always featured strong run games and a commitment to balance while paving the way for the success that produced Super Bowls in San Francisco and Denver.
