Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says it is “fortunate timing” for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to travel to the United States.
“It’s an important time to be abreast of what America is doing at the moment and to ensure that they keep their presence and interest in the Indo-Pacific up while the Middle East war is raging,” Mr Clennell said.
The Prime Minister will be in the United States from October 23rd to the 26th – he will then travel to China from November 4th to the 7th. Mr Clennell says Anthony Albanese will “surely” be talking to US President Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Antony Blinken, Lloyd Austin, and other officials about “what message to take to China” and “what to watch out for”.
The Prime Minister will also be meeting with various congressmen, “encouraging them” to assist with AUKUS going ahead after they began “threatening to hold up the legislation which would underpin the nuclear submarine agreement with Australia going ahead," Mr Clennell said. “There’s some hope with that with Joe Biden’s $105 billion legislation proposed for the Middle East war and Ukraine – inside that is $3 billion for developing the defence industrial capability of America which could get Republicans over the line on the AUKUS deal."
