Visiting Australia for leaders’ talks, New Zealand’s Christopher Luxon says he wants greater interoperability with Australia’s military.
Already a subscriber?New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said AUKUS was a “good thing for regional security” despite Wellington’s long-standing and bipartisan anti-nuclear stance, as he signalled he wanted his military to be more “interoperable” with Australian forces.
He said Australia was New Zealand’s “indispensable ally, partner and friend”, and he had three main areas of focus for the relationship: shared security ties, partnering on Pacific islands’ priorities and greater economic integration., the defence pact that had the acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines at its heart was an initiative that enhanced regional security and stability.
“Strengthening interoperability with our ally Australia will be a central principle of our capability decisions.” Meanwhile, new rules streamlining trade in weapons between Australia, the US and UK will start on September 1 after the three countries finalised overhauling their respective regulations.
