Archives turn up another opportunity
Aurania Resources, a gold explorer whose archival research is the basis of its Lost Cities-Cutucu gold project in Ecuador, has now found a nickel beach sand deposit in France from scouring old records.Aurania's consultant geologist, Stefan Ansermet, found a one-paragraph reference to an accumulation of natural nickel-iron alloy originating from asbestos mine waste disposed of in the Mediterranean Sea, in a 1968 Geological Survey of France report.
"A nickel prospect where a potential nickel-matte furnace feedstock requires no need for drilling, blasting, or beneficiation and can be shipped from Corsica direct to a purchaser sounds like a dream scenario," said Aurania Resources chief executive Dr Keith Barron. Both awaruite and magnetite are heavy minerals easily recovered from beach sand by gravity techniques.
