and requires around the clock care says she fears for her girl’s future if a battle with the NDIS does not go their way.
“These behaviours make tasks such as bathing, dressing, general hygiene, cleaning her teeth and brushing her hair extremely mentally and physically challenging,” Davies, her daughter’s primary carer, said. The family was dealt a bitter blow in November when Emily’s National Disability Insurance Scheme funding was trimmed from an “already limited” $130,000 to $108,000 for the next year.
In one document seen by 7NEWS.com.au, an occupational therapist recommended Emily receive up to 44 hours of support — largely 2:1 support with a professional disability worker and an informal helper — every week. “If Emily doesn’t receive the recommended funding, she will be at risk of deterioration in her functional independence including all mobility and self-care tasks as well as participation in activities of daily living — and result in higher levels of seclusion — which would be avoidable,” Davies said.
“The agency continues to work to ensure a better NDIS experience for every participant, and acknowledges a participant’s right to appeal decisions to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal,” they said. “These numbers are just the start in ensuring people with disability are able to get on with living their lives without having to go to court to argue over the level of support they receive,” Shorten said.AAP
