The Austin Animal Center pauses intake due to overcrowding, only accepting emergencies, as animals brought in exceed adoptions; adoption fees waived.

The Austin Animal Center has temporarily halted animal intake due to overcrowding, only accepting emergency cases, as the number of animals brought in exceeds adoptions. . The problem is what the shelter calls "critical capacity issues." People are just bringing in more animals than they are able to adopt out.

Overcrowding has been an ongoing problem for the Austin Animal Center. CBS Austin reported on this issue before when they temporarily resorted to keeping some animals in crates when their kennels became overcrowded. But the inflow of animals tends to exceed the number that the public is able or willing to adopt. So beginning July 2 the Austin Animal Center says it can only take in animals for emergencies.

Recently the shelter resorted to the expensive practice of paying to board animals elsewhere just to clear space at their own shelter. And the Austin Animal Center's options are limited if it wants to hang on to its long-held mission of being a "no-kill" shelter. Deven Desai, a consultant hired by the City of Austin explains, “The more animals you take in, and the less you euthanize theoretically you're going to start running out of space.

The center says intake will reopen when, "appropriate kennel space is available for all animals." But if you're looking to adopt an animal, come on by. They're open 11-7 everyday and adoption fees are currently waived.
