The current school year may be almost over, but school district leaders across the state are hard at work right now trying to figure outfor next year. To keep their costs from growing, Austin ISD is looking at instituting a hiring freeze primarily in their central office , and this action could be just the beginning of moreof the district becomes more clear... and more dire. Thursday night, School Superintendent Matias Segura couldn't have made it more clear.

The hiring freeze right now is focused on the district's central office and begins June 1, but Segura admits that won't be enough to stem the red ink that threatens to swell to $89 million in the next school year.Segura tells board members he's not looking at just cost reductions in the central office operation but a realignment of operations before they consider any costs cuts in the classrooms.

Like many school districts, Austin ISD is in a budget bind after state lawmakers ignored their calls to raise the daily allotment the state spends per student on public education. Recent inflation notwithstanding, State lawmakers decided to hold the line on school spending.
