United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin III visited local troops in Zamboanga City on Wednesday, the Armed Forces of the Philippines Western Mindanao Command said.
Austin came to the Westmincom headquarters at Camp Don Basilio Navarro around 11:30 a.m. and stayed for 30 minutes, Westmincom commander Lieutenant General Roy Galido said.
"They are here to help us in our mission, especially in counter-terrorism, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response," Galido told reporters. According to him, Austin visited the joint special operations team and met with AFP chief General Andres Centino.on Tuesday night, is also set to meet with his Philippine counterpart, Carlito Galvez Jr.
Among the topics expected to be tackled during his meeting with Galvez and other officials is the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement , the accord between the US and the Philippines inked in 2014 that provided for the increased rotational presence of American troops in the country. —
