Australia and South Africa have qualified for the World Test Championship final, to be played at Lord's in June. Australia secured their spot with a six-wicket victory over India, while South Africa edged out Pakistan in a nail-biting finish.
Australia and South Africa will contest the World Test Championship final at Lord's this summer after both secured their spots in the showpiece event. South Africa booked their place with a tense two-wicket victory over Pakistan at Centurion in late December, while Australia sealed their spot as the Proteas' opponents with a comfortable six-wicket win over India in the New Year Test at Sydney.
The final will take place at the 'Home of Cricket' from June 11, live on Sky Sports, with Australia seeking a consecutive title after defeating India at The Kia Oval in 2023. Pat Cummins' side's triumph at the SCG ended India and Sri Lanka's hopes of reaching the final. England were already out of contention due to a combination of too many defeats and over-rate indiscretions across the two-year cycle. The points system for the World Test Championship sees each of the nine teams - Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies - play six series (three at home and three away). Due to teams not playing an equal number of matches, the table is determined by percentage of points won, with 12 points awarded for a win (100 per cent), six for a tie (50 per cent) and four for a draw (33.3 per cent). Losing a game results in zero points. Teams can also lose points for over-rate infringements, as England and Australia did during The 2023 Ashes and most recently in the series-opening Test against New Zealand. England were deducted a staggering 19 points in total for slow over-rates in the first, second, fourth and fifth Tests of the 2023 Ashes and then a further three against New Zealand in Christchurch in late 2024, taking their total to a whopping 22 overall
