Support for migration in Australia has fallen, a poll has found, but economic modelling suggests the proposed cuts will hit the economy

Australia is to cap the number of foreign students from next year as part of a wide crackdown on migration.

“Students are back but so are the shonks – people are seeking to exploit this industry to make a quick buck,” he said. “These reforms are designed to make it better and fairer, and set it up on a more sustainable footing going forward.” Economic modelling commissioned by Sydney University found that the proposed cuts could cause a A$4.1 billion hit to the Australian economy and 21,922 direct and indirect job losses in 2025.Universities Australia Chair David Lloyd said migration controls should not be imposed “at the expense of any one sector, particularly one as economically important as education”.
