Prime Minister Anthony Albanese rejects US President Donald Trump's proposal to take over the Gaza Strip, emphasizing Australia's commitment to a 'two-state solution' and its independent foreign policy decisions.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has distanced himself from US President Donald Trump ’s Gaza plan, stating that Australia is a “sovereign nation” and makes its own foreign policy decisions. Trump announced on Tuesday that the United States could take control of the war-torn Gaza Strip , transforming it into a “Riviera of the Middle East” after Palestinians are relocated elsewhere. This followed his suggestion last week that Palestinians could be moved to Egypt and Jordan.

Trump’s proposal has already sparked widespread criticism, with Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia rejecting it. Albanese, speaking on Sunrise on Thursday, emphasized Australia’s independence in determining its foreign policy. He stated, “We make our own decisions as a sovereign nation — let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, this is a statement that’s been made yesterday.” He added that he wouldn’t engage in daily commentary on US presidential statements. Albanese reiterated Australia’s support for a “two-state solution,” which contrasts with Trump’s stated position. A two-state solution proposes resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by establishing two states: Israel for the Jewish people and Palestine for the Palestinian people. Albanese asserted, “We are consistent with a two-state solution, is what we have said. We haven’t changed our position. Which is for a two-state solution ... (it will be) a consistent position going forward.” When asked about “Gazans being allowed home,” Albanese remained firm on Australia’s commitment to the two-state solution. Despite the apparent conflict with Trump’s position, Albanese underscored the strong relationship between Australia and the United States. He highlighted their alliance, economic and defense partnerships, including through AUKUS. Albanese emphasized that Australia engages constructively with the US on matters directly affecting their relationship, recognizing the US as an important nation for both Australia and the world. Following Trump’s announcement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio clarified that the plan was not intended to be hostile and that details still needed to be worked out by the US. He characterized the proposal as a “generous move” aimed at clearing debris and destruction in the Palestinian enclave. Rubio acknowledged the Gaza Strip’s dire situation, likened to a “natural disaster,” where unexploded munitions, debris, and rubble made living conditions impossible. He stated, “In the interim, obviously people are going to have to live somewhere while you’re rebuilding it.” Qatar, a mediator in Gaza Strip ceasefire talks, expressed that it was too early to discuss Palestinian resettlement. Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari told Fox News that the focus was on achieving the second phase of a ceasefire deal to end the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Responding to questions about Trump’s proposal, Al-Ansari emphasized the sensitivity surrounding Palestinian displacement and stated that it was premature to speculate on the proposal’s impact on the ceasefire talks.
