French artillery shells filled with Australian powder will be reaching the Ukrainian frontline in the next few months, following a deal struck in Paris.

| Australia and France will team up to supply Ukraine with millions of dollars’ worth of artillery shells, with deliveries to start reaching the war’s front lines in the next few months.

“Both of us have supported Ukraine separately in other ways, but we wanted to make it really clear that Australia and France do stand together in support of Ukraine in the face of this Russian aggreesion,” Mr Marles said., it was possible to overlook the Ukrainian military’s daily requirement for ammunition and other basic supplies. He said Ukraine needed shipments that were “regular, predictable and reliable”.

French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna called AUKUS “an incident I shall not come back to”, and Mr Lecornu downplayed the tripartite deal’s impact on the Franco-Australian rapprochement.“Does AUKUS block the capacity for our military cooperation in the future? The answer is no, otherwise ... we would not be here holding this 2+2 meeting,” he said.

He envisaged the two militaries “working closely on building our interoperability, working closely on having a much greater sense of operation between our two defence forces, [and] working much more closely in respect of our defence industry and in sharing technology”. But the supply of ammunition will meet a more basic military need as President Volodymyr Zelensky’s forces prepare either to mount a spring offensive and/or to repel a Russian one.
