More than 100 Australian weather stations have just registered their coldest May minimum temperatures on record. And the cold snap had Sydney experiencing some of its iciest May nights in 66 years.

Sydney shivered through its coldest May in 53 years. The mean temperature, the average of all minimums and maximums, was exactly 15C, the lowest since 1970.

The city's nights were particular chilly with minimums of 11.8C, nearly 2C below the long-term average.AdelaideCanberra's May was frosty. The mean temperature was the lowest in 11 years at just 7.8C. Nights were especially cold, averaging only 0.5C, about 2.5C below normal.Temperatures in Hobart were mostly average this May.Darwin's days were mostly average, but its nights were the coldest in 12 years at 20.8C, more than one degree below the average of 22.2C.

The record breakers vary from weather station sites in operation for less than 30 years to long-standing stations with about 100 years of data.
