Top military figures are targeted as the Albanese government unleashes travel bans and asset freezes on the Myanmar junta and Iran’s hardline regime.
| Australia has launched a fresh round of sanctions against Myanmar and Iran, with Foreign Minister Penny Wong saying repression and violence had forced her government’s hand.
The Iranian targets will be hit with Magnitsky-style sanctions, and comprise 16 Iranian law enforcement, political and military officials involved in the violent crackdown on protests following the death of an Iranian woman. The reference is to the US’ Magnitsky legislation that sanctions foreign government officials deemed to be human rights offenders.
Britain and the European Union are reportedly considering whether to ratchet up the pressure; they are considering whether to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps , the political and military force that enforces the regime’s policies, as a terrorist organisation. On the Myanmar front, Australia has been wary of sanctioning the regime’s top leaders, prompting criticism from human rights activists.
“Despite these calls, the regime has continued its anti-democratic actions against the people of Myanmar, including violence and recent steps targeting opposition voices.
