Australia will spend almost $10 billion on a new fleet of Hercules aircraft as it updates the ageing workhorse of the Defence Force.
The federal government will confirm on Monday the purchase of 20 C-130J Hercules that will expand and replace the current 12 aircraft operated by Defence.The heavy lift planes can deliver cargo with short runways, and drop cargo and paratroops.
A Defence spokesperson said the dozen existing C-130s would be replaced by 2030 and the delivery of the remaining eight would be subject to the US production schedule. Defence Minister Richard Marles said the aircraft were important for the Defence Force and the entire nation.
