An Australian engineer has revealed his shock at the collapse of a major bridge on North America’s east coast, saying it appeared that immense force on an important pillar was enough to bring the crossing down. There are grave fears for about 20 people after a cargo ship collided with Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge about 1.30am local time on Tuesday.
“Whilst the exact cause of the incident is yet to be determined, the Dali has now mobilised its Qualified Individual Incident response service,” it said, adding that all crew members, including the two pilots who were aboard, have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. Caprani said a ship of the Dali’s size, at 300m long and almost 50m wide, had an enormous mass that when coupled with speed “imparts a significant force”.
