After 12 months of tasting, our expert reveals his picks of 2024: a diverse bunch of white and red wines, and a couple of non-alcoholic stunners.
How do I pick the best drinks of 2024? They’re the most outstanding liquids to have passed my lips over the past 12 months of tasting as drinks writer for. The main criterion for selection is that the wine or spirit – or mead or cordial – in question has to have that “X factor”: something special that makes me smile and want to do a dance of joy, regardless of how posh, rare or humble it is. It has to be a drink that makes me go “mmm”.
I also think it’s important that the top 20 reflects the various trends out there in the drinks world in 2024. Which is why there are classic expressions of riesling and chardonnay alongside more challenging skin-contact “amber” wines and novel varieties; why there’s pinot noir and; why there’s a non-alcoholic white, and a wine-like drink made from honey, and a couple of groundbreaking spirits.
