The wind hovering behaviour of the bird of prey is the ‘closest representation in the avian world to fixed wing aircraft’, researcher says

RMIT and the University of Bristol researchers began tracking the flight motions of two Australian kestrels. They attached reflective markers to the birds and analysed their motion using a motion tracking system – the same technology used to create CGI effects.found kestrels – which are known for flying without flapping their wings – use a different approach from drones to stay stable.

Changing the surface area of their wings ensures they fly with more force over a shorter period and respond more quickly to disturbances, which are essential to “mitigating turbulence or reducing the effects of turbulence on flight”, he said.
