Australian authorities have successfully prevented a planned antisemitic attack after discovering a caravan filled with explosives and a list of Jewish targets in Sydney.

Australia n police have thwarted a planned antisemitic attack after uncovering a caravan filled with explosives alongside a list of Jewish targets. Deputy police commissioner David Hudson revealed the discovery of sufficient explosives to create a bomb capable of a 130ft (40m) blast, hidden in a caravan in the Sydney suburb of Dural on January 19th. The substance identified was Powergel, an explosive commonly used in the mining industry.

Alongside the explosives, officers found a list of Jewish targets, which Commissioner Hudson declined to disclose but stated had been brought to the attention of relevant community members. Hudson characterized this as a dangerous 'escalation' in a string of antisemitic arson and graffiti incidents plaguing major Australian cities in recent months. This follows an arson attack on Melbourne's Adass Israel Synagogue in December, which resulted in one injury and extensive damage, and the torching of a childcare center in east Sydney on January 21st. 'This is certainly an escalation. The use of explosives ... have the potential to cause a great deal of damage,' Hudson stated. New South Wales premier Chris Minns confirmed that counterterrorism authorities are leading the investigation. 'This is the discovery of a potential mass casualty event. There's only one way of calling it out and that is terrorism. That's what we're very worried about,' he expressed. 'This would strike terror into the community, particularly the Jewish community, and it must be met with the full resources of the government.' While several arrests have been made, Commissioner Hudson clarified that these are unrelated to the discovered explosives. Australia's largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, home to 85% of the country's Jewish population, have witnessed a surge in antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents since the Israel-Hamas war erupted in 2023. These incidents encompass attacks on synagogues, buildings, businesses, and vehicles. Legislation was enacted in that year prohibiting public displays of terror group symbols. On October 7th, 2023, Hamas militants launched an attack on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 people. The Gaza territory's health ministry reported that over 47,000 people have since been killed in Gaza
