Rooftop solar has contracted, but solar farms have kept Australia on record solar growth.
Australians resumed bolting on rooftop solar power in the second half of 2022 as the east coast electricity market crunch driven by the global energy crisis began to bite, after a sharp downturn in installations early in the year.
“[This allows] us to post another record year – just,” said Warwick Johnson, managing director of Sunwiz. While system prices rose in 2022 for the first time since the solar industry reached maturity, Mr Johnson said these price changes didn’t contribute to the drop-off in installations. Instead, Mr Johnson said the drop-off can be explained by people shifting attention to recreation after lockdowns, away from home improvement projects, until electricity prices made front page news.
Still, a total of 5.3 GW of solar capacity in total was installed in 2022, which lifted total installed capacity in the country by 20 per cent. While SunWiz forecasts the rooftop market will grow, it will not be enough to offset the reduced volume of solar farms. The reduction in solar farms coming online in 2023 will mean a year of overall contraction.

Australians ‘deserve to know’ how Voice to Parliament will workShadow Minister for Indigenous Australians Julian Leeser says Australians “deserve to know how” the Voice to Parliament will work before voting on it. “Australians have been asking these sorts of questions because they want to have a sense of, ‘how will this body work?’ What sort of difference will it make?
