Thousands of Australians have paid solemn tribute at Anzac Cove on the shores of the Gallipoli Peninsula to mark 108 years since the first landing of Allied soldiers at the site.
More than 1,100 Australians attended the Anzac Day Dawn Service on the Gallipoli Peninsula, which is an annual joint effort between Australian, New Zealand and Turkish authorities.
Many pinned rosemary - which grows along the Gallipoli coast - to their collars and sipped on a “gunfire breakfast” concoction of rum and coffee, similar to that drank by soldiers before heading into battle. Mr Keogh spoke of the importance of the Anzac legend, a legacy he said continues to shape Australia’s national identity and values. Following Mr Keogh’s address, several official representatives laid wreaths before the Last Post was played shortly after 6am.
