bestseller – many who had written it off as a book aimed at “guilty” white people found it to be a gamechanging skewering of social-media discourse with a historically grounded analysis of anti-racism, collectivism, neoliberalism, and post-colonialism. We sat down with the author to discuss her writing process and the book’s subversive aesthetic.
“In terms of people’s reactions to the cover, I had some discomfort with not being able to fully reveal what I was doing. In the book itself, by the second page I’ve said the problems inherent with trying to speak to a generic group of people – I talk about whiteness as a generic category to flatten difference.”
In the book, you describe social media as a “poison chalice” and a space that “gamifies division”. What do you see as the problems with nominally “progressive” online discourses about race? You write about how a lot of online anti-racism discourse amounts to demanding that white people “give up their privilege”.
